Congress leader, son killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh

A prominent Congress leader, who had led a campaign against Naxals, and his son were on Monday killed after being chased in a by about 500 Maoists in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, police said.

Budhram Rana was chased in the paddy field and shot dead and his son was axed and then shot at and killed by about 500 Maoists at Musalur village, about 525 km from the state capital, Bijapur police sources told reporters.

120 people booked in Chhattisgarh village for violence

Raipur, Nov 7 - Tension gripped a Chhattisgarh village Wednesday after police arrested 120 people on charges indulging in rioting and murder after an 11-year-old boy was crushed to death by a truck Monday, police said.

Devendra Nirmalkar's death on the spot after being hit by a speeding truck had provoked a mob into setting several vehicles on fire on National Highway 6 near Rasmada village, some 70 km west of state capital Raipur.

Thousands of Indian tribals protest industry plans

RAIPUR, India (Reuters) - More than 75,000 tribal people armed with bows and arrows took to the streets on Monday in mineral-rich central India to protest over plans to encourage industrial development in the region, police said.

India has planned hundreds of special economic zones (SEZs) -- tax-free industrial enclaves -- to boost manufacturing and export growth and provide jobs, but the issue of land acquisition has met stiff resistance from villagers.

Monday's rally was called one of the biggest protest marches of tribal villagers in Chhattisgarh state.

Angry mob sets ablaze 12 trucks over boy's death

Raipur, Nov 6 - Chhattisgarh's Durg district was tense Tuesday after an angry mob set ablaze at least 12 trucks after one of the vehicles mowed down an 11-year-old boy, police said.

'Extra policemen have been deployed to maintain law and order after a mob set at least 12 trucks on fire Monday night on National Highway-6 at Rasmada village after a school boy, Devendra Nirmalkar, was crushed by a speeding truck,' Additional Superintendent of Police Prashant Thakur told reporters.

Naxals may have fled to Andhra: Cops

RAIPUR: Police think the Maoists who killed 16 cops in an ambush in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh have fled to Andhra, where most of the Naxal leaders are holed up and training camps are located.

"The state border is hardly 10 km from the spot and the Andhra Pradesh police can reach the spot in no time," said a senior officer from the anti-Naxalite wing.

State home minister Ramvichar Netam told TOI, "Five of the police personnel have returned but the chances of survival of the remaining 16 are bleak."

BJP demands more troops along Indo-Pak border

Raipur, Nov 5 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh said Monday that India should build up troops along the border with Pakistan as terrorists could try to infiltrate into India in the wake of emergency in that country.

"Presently, there is a civil-war like situation in Pakistan as President General Pervez Musharraf has failed to rein in terrorists. India should display better diplomatic skills now and work for an early end to emergency rule there, and restoration of democracy as well," Singh told reporters at the Raipur airport.

Chhattisgarh to build two more power plants (New Kerala)

Raipur, Oct 12 : Fertiliser major Krishak Bharati Co-operative Ltd (KRIBHCO) and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd (CIL), have offered to set up joint ventures with Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CESB) for 2,000 MW and 1,000 MW coal-fired power plants, respectively.

Maoists in CRPF uniform kill five in Chhattisgarh(Second Lead)

Raipur, Oct 29 (IANS) About 200 armed Maoist rebels, a majority of them women, clad in paramilitary force fatigues shot dead five special police officers (SPOs) and critically wounded three others Monday in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district.

The Maoists were wearing the uniform of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) when they attacked the SPOs at Pamulvaya village, about 500 km south of Raipur and seven km from Bijapur town, the district headquarters.

'We have five casualties, all SPOs,' Ratanlal Dangi, the Bijapur district superintendent of police, told IANS by telephone.
