Five Indian police killed in gunfight with Maoists

RAIPUR, India — Maoist guerrillas killed five policemen in a gunfight in India's central state of Chhattisgarh on Sunday, a senior police officer told AFP.

Three of the men belonged to the elite Border Security Force paramilitary group and two were regular police officers, Chhattisgarh's anti-Maoist operations chief Ramniwas, who only uses one name, told AFP.

The clash took place in Kanker district, 175 kilometres (110 miles) south of the state capital Raipur.

Poverty-stricken woman set kids, herself ablaze

Unable to get money to treat her children, a poor woman in a Chhattisgarh village set herself and her two children on fire, police said Friday.

The incident took place Thursday in Bhelwa Pataibahar village in Jashpur district, some 400 km north of capital Raipur, when 27-year-old Kamla Bai killed her three-year-old daughter and three-month-old son before ending her own life.

RAIPUR: Hundreds of tonnes of explosives have gone missing in transit in India over several months, police said Thursday, amid fears that militants or illegal mining outfits might be involved.

About 160 truckloads of explosives sent from Rajasthan state to neighbouring Madhya Pradesh in central India have failed to arrive since April.

“Two people have been arrested by police, and rewards have been offered for four other men,” Anwesh Mangalam, the inspector general of police in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, told AFP.

‘Obesity before adolescence in Indian kids’

BANGALORE: A recent survey on the level of physical fitness among urban children reveals that obesity has set in even before adolescence among Indian children.
The study - conducted by city-based EduSports, a sports-management company that works closely with school children - revealed that nearly 23 per cent of the 4,098 children (aged between 5 and 14 years) surveyed across the country, possessed a high Body Mass Index (BMI).
While, 19 per cent of the children showed low BMI level, a whopping 42 per cent children surveyed did not possess ideal BMI ratios.

Bank official held in job fraud case

NAGPUR: Sonegaon police have arrested Gangadhar Rohankar, manager of Bank of Maharshtra at Raipur for job fraud. Police said that Rohankar duped complainant, Nilesh Raut and his three friends, Vinod Jamdar, Mahesh Solakhi and Rajkumar Raut of Rs 3.15 lakh.

He allegedly promised them employment at the bank but failed to do so. On a complaint registered by Raut on Sunday night, Rohankar was arrested from a luxurious hotel in the city. Sonegaon police have registered a complaint.

Chhattisgarh shuts three polluting industries

The Chhattisgarh government Saturday forced three industrial units here to shut down production after a state minister found them openly defying pollution control norms.

Official sources said during a surprise check Friday at a cluster of industrial units on the outskirts of Raipur, Environment Minister Rajesh Munat found that electro-static precipitators -- an air pollution control device -- not working at Indian Steel and Power Private Limited, Agrawal Sponge Iron Private Limited and Devi Iron and Power Private Limited.

CWG medal winners from Chhattisgarh to be rewarded

RAIPUR: Sportspersons from Chhattisgarh who win gold medals at the Commonwealth Games will be awarded a cash prize of Rs.8 lakh each, it was announced on Thursday.

"Players belonging to Chhattisgarh will get Rs.8 lakh as award money from the state government if he or she strikes gold at the Games," an official statement quoted chief minister Raman Singh as saying.

Singh, who is also the chairman of Chhattisgarh Olympic Association, said the players hailing from the state will get Rs.6 lakh each for winning silver medals and Rs. 4 lakh each for winning bronze medals for the country.
