RAIPUR: A Chinese company has outbid public sector engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) to win a contract from the Chhattisgarh government for a 600 mw thermal power project in Korba district.

The China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Company (CMEC) bagged the contract quoting the lowest rate Rs.3.61 crores (Rs.36.1 million), an official of the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CSEB) told media.

The contract for the construction of two units, each one of 300 mw, went to the Chinese firm despite stiff protests by the Employees Federation of CSEB.

The plant will come up in the state's coal abundant Korba district in the north where almost all major powerhouses are based. The National Thermal Power Corp (NTPC) has already a super thermal power station of 2,100 mw plant in Korba town.
