Vedanta Group has shortlisted Siemens (NYSE:SI) , Philips, GE (NYSE:GE) , Varian Medical Systems (NYSE:VAR) and Kirloskar Technologies for procuring equipment for its world-class cancer hospital and research centre being set up at the cost of Rs 350 crore at Naya Raipur in Chhattisgarh.

Lt Col Vinay Sharma, Chief Project Officer, Vedanta Cancer Hospital Project, said a major chunk of the project cost goes to procure modern equipment, in which the company would invest about Rs 150 crore. The civil and structural works are undertaken by B.E. Billimoria & Co, electrical work was awarded to Siemens, while heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) is being done by Bluestar.

Vedanta Medical Research Foundation, a non-profit organisation of the group, has tied up with the Chhattisgarh Government, which has provided 50 acres of land at Naya Raipur as its contribution for the public-private project. Once operational, there will be an accommodation facility for relatives accompanying the patients from different States, he added.

“If all goes well, the 350-bed cancer hospital with 100 to 125 doctors should be operational by October next year,” Col Sharma said and added that the hospital has been designed by the renowned architect Mr Kamal Malik. Equipment and manpower details are being planned by a team of experts under the guidance of the well-known oncologist Dr P.B. Desai, former Director of Tata Memorial Hospital. The company will also set up five secondary care centres in 16 districts of Chhattisgarh to conduct cancer detection and awareness camps.

The objective of the project is to develop a “centre of excellence” for high quality referral medical care, surgical and radiation oncology rendered in a scientific and academic environment, besides bringing in ultra-modern, multi-modality diagnostic and therapeutic facilities for better treatment at an affordable cost, said Col Sharma.
